My mosquito costume

OK, so it may be the best 15 bucks I've ever spent. A mosquito net jacket with full hood and face coverage. The arms and waistline have drawstrings to make sure nothing can get in. With this and a set of gloves, I'm invincible outside. I can't stand bug spray so this item is a welcome addition to my wardrobe. On the fashion side of the equation, it is a complete fail. It makes me look like some sort of Taliban Tranny ready to hit the stroll. But I don't care. There's no one for miles around to make fun of me anyway. And besides, the mosquitoes around here come in swarms and get get quite huge. Last summer two of them threw me to the ground while a third tried to fuck me.

  1. Lol, that last sentence made me laugh. A couple of years ago, hurricane Dolly left quite a bit of ground water and we were inundated with mosquitoes. No time to buy a bug jacket - lil' mothers were here already. But I took a 2nd look at my leafyflauge dove hunting jacket and pants. Netting covered with loose leaf camoflauge.

Worked like a charm, but it was funny watching a bush walking behind a push mower. . .

No, I got lucky, there was an axe nearby, so I came out ok.

  6. A fellow I know, an experienced beekeeper, generally foregoes the bee suit et al (usually just a veil), and has come to calling the full outfit a monkey suit.

Most veil designs don't keep out mosquitoes very well, but I definitely like wearing my bee suit (minus the veil and gloves) while working in the garden: sun protection, loose and cool, and many kinds of flies/pests can't make sense of a bright white object.

  8. Love your blog, can't wait to see your earthbag home complete. It is my eventual goal to build my own home in a similar fashion, maybe geopolymers though. You guys look like your doing a great job, just neat job on the placement and tamping, your home will last centuries if maintained I'm certain. I cracked up at that last line!
